Martha was born here on the 19th of March 2014. When she was a lamb Martha looked like a calf with her white face markings. The year Martha was born was the last year that we bred all the sheep. As in 2015, I had my own daughter and lambing took a hiatus and I never went down the path of breeding loads of lambs to sell ever again. Back in 2014, I was struggling with the job I was doing and financially so I couldn’t keep many lambs that year. Martha would probably have gone to a new home but she developed an allergy to sunlight around the time she was weaned. This caused sores and skin loss on the white pigment on her face. As such there was no way I could sell her and so she stayed here with her mum Harriet. Then is 2018 Martha had lambs of her own. These were the first lambs born here since I had my own daughter Elsie in 2015. We named Martha’s twin lambs Pip and Posy after Elsie’s favorite book characters at the time. Martha’s lambs took after their mum with their fun brown and white markings. Because they grew up with Elsie they absolutely love children and are very friendly and affectionate. Unlike their mum Martha who prefers to keep to herself these days. Martha was a very aggressive protective mother. So much so that she even rammed me and was not very nice to the other lambs who weren’t her own. For some reason, I don’t have many photos at all of Martha. She always seems to be hiding away in the background and has a knack for evading the camera. In 2019 I used Martha’s fleece to felt and weave 2 matching cushions. One side was felted to resemble a ‘sheepskin’ and the other was woven on a peg loom. Some of her mum Harriet’s fleece was also used in the weaving. One of these cushions was bought as a birthday gift and the other was bought by a local lady who is a great supporter of mine and the sheep. Martha’s fleece is beautiful and really lovely to work with. It felts very well and it is also lovely to weave and spin. Martha’s cushions helped pay for the sheep feed that fed her and her flock mates over the winter of 2019/2020.
