Felted Fleece Rug ‘Dash’ – Vegetarian Sheepskin Stunning Icelandic Wool Throw Sheep Friendly Handmade in Wales

£230.00

Stunning unique felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug handmade from Dash’s 2020 fleece…

This stunning fleece is made from the fleece from a little Icelandic cross sheep called Dash (in the photos) who lives with her mum Dotty (pictured together) and many other sheep at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared her myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm little Dash or her fleece. This vegetarian sheepskin rug is smooth and silky soft with beautiful wavy grey locks that have natural sun-bleached highlights on the tips. This particular fleece is just that little bit more special because it is Dash’s first-ever fleece – the baby fleece that she was born with. Baby fleeces are unique in colour and wool structure and future adult fleeces from the same sheep will never look like that special first fleece – it is unique. The proceeds from its sale will help pay for her flock mates care throughout the year.

This natural 100% wool item is ethical and has great provenance it has been made in its entirety at our smallholding. The carded wool used for the back is a mixture of wool from our sheep Mochi and Blossom with some gotland wool that I bought from a small pet flock and then washed and hand-carded here on the farm. I wanted to make the reverse of this rug interesting too and reflect the beautiful browns and greys that are present in Dash’s fleece. So I spun some fine wool specifically for this purpose to give a beautiful unique pattern on the back. So you can display this rug either side up and it will look stunning.

The carded wool used for the back is a mixture of wool from our sheep Mochi and Blossom with some gotland wool that I bought from a small pet flock and then washed and hand-carded here on the farm. Dash’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, photo prop, or throw. It is well felted and boasts beautiful long whispy locks. This rug has an amazing airy drapey feel to it. I would class it as a lightweight rug. I feel it would be best suited to very light use and display purposes – this is because it is so soft and may tend to felt with heavy use or moult. It would be suitable to drape across a bed or as a floor rug in a light traffic area. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it does shed wool/fibers to some degree – as Dash is a 3/4 Icelandic sheep it may molt more than the average fleece. This rug may shed on the reverse side too.

Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but will last for years and years if cared for.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 125cm long x 70cm wide. The rug is more long and narrow than some other felted fleece rugs.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft, silky and hair like in places. The locks are smooth and long and wavy with little curls here and there.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a magical natural mix of light and medium greys with brown highlights.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Dash collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of hay and grass seeds mostly.. However, you may find bits of hay as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. mostly along the neck and centre of the fleece.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare, colourful flock of sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep into the food chain and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a fulltime mum and slave to sheep! In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
