Description
Stunning unique felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug handmade from Frieda’s 2020 fleece…
That’s Frieda in the photos – admiring her own fleece rug. Frieda is a beautiful Gotland sheep and she lives with 70 other sheep including her lambs at my home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared her myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm Frieda or her fleece. This vegetarian sheepskin rug is silky and soft with beautiful curls and natural shades of grey. The proceeds from its sale will help pay for her flock mates care throughout the year.
This natural 100% wool item is ethical and has great provenance it has been made in its entirety at our smallholding. The carded wool used for the back is a mixture of wool from our sheep Mochi and Alice with some Gotland wool that I bought from a small pet flock and then washed and hand-carded here on the farm. I’ve included a photo of this and of the process of felting the rug. I had the inspiration to make this rug reversible so the underside is interesting too! I felted in some cream handspun wool and locks (that came from our sheep Alice) to give a beautifully unique pattern on the back. Because Gotland wool felts very easily some areas of the fluffy fleece had already over felted before it was sheared this is natural and actually makes the rug thicker and more durable.
This fleece would look amazing as a bedside rug or throw. It is very well felted and is quite heavy and thick. With a beautiful natural luxurious shiny look about and being soft to touch, Frieda’s rug is perfect to cosy up with on a cold winters night. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…
Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it does shed wool somewhat but with this particular rug that is minimal. This rug may shed on the reverse side too.
Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but will last for years and years.
Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 115cm long x 72-84cm wide. The rug has a natural shape as it came off Frieda, it is her whole fleece so some areas may measure a bit longer or narrower.
Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and silky. The locks are smooth and long in places and more tight and curly in others.
Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural mix of light and medium greys.
VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Frieda collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of hay and grass seeds mostly.. However, you may find bits of hay as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. mostly along the spine/centre of the fleece. But the do pull out quite easily.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare, colourful flock of sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep into the food chain and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a fulltime mum and slave to sheep! In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
