Stunning unique felted fleece wool rug handmade from Luna’s 2020 fleece – just wool…
This beautiful felted fleece wool rug is made from the soft wavy fleece from Luna (pictured in the photos wearing this exact fleece!). Luna is a Wensleydale cross Texel sheep who lives with her best pal Hermione and many other sheep friends at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared Luna myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm them or their fleeces. This felted fleece rug is a beautiful natural white/cream colour. It has a dream-like look about it and is just as soft and fluffy as it looks. It is made using almost the entire fleece that Luna grew in 2020. I spent many hours preparing this fleece and arranging the individual locks. It is a unique item as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc. The proceeds from the sale of this rug will help pay for Luna and her flockmates’ food, care products, and any veterinary help they need throughout the year.
A natural wool item with great provenance – it has been made in its entirety at our smallholding by my hands. The reverse of the rug is made from hand-carded wool that is then hand felted to Luna’s fleece. The carded wool used for the backing comes from some of our other sheep, it was washed and hand-carded here on the farm by me. I don’t buy in ready prepared processed wool for the back of my rugs, everything is made by my hands here at the farm. The backing wool is a mix from our sheep Noddy, Norbert and Rupert. The particular wool I used did contain a fair bit of hay and grass seeds which are visible on the back of the rug. I have a waste not-want not attitude to the wool my sheep grow and so I do sometimes use wool that contains dried leaves and grass seeds for the backs of the rugs – they are completely harmless but I do reflect this in the price too.
Luna’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, photo prop, throw or floor rug. It is very soft and fluffy. I would class it as a medium weight rug, perfect to cosy up under, drape on a sofa or use as a bedside rug. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…
Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it may shed wool/fibers to some degree – Luna’s fleece does molt lightly but will likely ‘bed in’ more with time and use.
Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use in a clean environment but will last for years and years if cared for and treated with respect. They can be hand washed too.
Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 145cm long x 80-95cm wide. The rug is slightly rectangular in shape.
Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is airy and soft. Some parts are tighter curls and others are more open and fluffy.
Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural creamy white colour with a bit of a shine to it. Some of the tips of the locks have a grey tone to them where the fleece has weathers during the winter months on Luna’s back.
VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I used mostly the clean parts of Luna’s fleece for this rug and spent a lot of time removing any noticeable bits of debris that I’d missed. However, in Luna’s fleece you can still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds on the fleece side as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece… Please note there are just a few small areas like this not the majority of the fleece. However as stated above, the felted underside of the rug does contain more pieces of dried grass and seeds, there is a photo showing some of this. It is a testament to how natural and lightly processed it is and I have reflected this in the price too.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
