Handmade felted fleece “vegetarian sheepskin” rug made from Doris’ 2020 fleece.. 100% Natural wool
That’s Doris in the photos – alive and well and growing a new fleece already! Doris is a Valais Blacknose cross Greyface Dartmoor sheep and she lives with 70 other sheep at my home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared her myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep though I must admit I had to enlist the help of my husband to help hold Doris as she is such a big heavy girl. Much like Doris herself this rug is a heavyweight, simply huge and beautiful and the proceeds from its sale will help pay for her (and her 70 friends and family members) care throughout the year.
This is a truly handmade natural 100% wool item. The yarn that was used to stitch and hold the raw fleece together is from my own sheep and handspun by myself, the carded wool used for the back is from my sheep and hand-carded by myself. Doris’ rug is a wonderful irregular shape completely unique it is made up of long wavy locks and tighter shorter curls, simply beautiful.. I managed to keep the neck wool whole when we are shearing Doris and this rug even contains the area of wool that was growing on top of Doris’s head which is visible as a faded grey colour patch of curls. Because we had such a wet muddy winter the white fleeces got quite stained and even though this rug has been thoroughly hand washed a number of times the wool has a beautiful natural creamy colour to it in areas and a grey strip along the centre of the fleece.
This fleece would look absolutely amazing as a floor rug on a wood or stone floor due to its heavyweight and durable nature of the wool. But it would also sit perfectly well as a luxurious decorative throw on a bed or sofa… It has a beautiful natural rustic look about it and is completely unique in shape. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…
Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it does shed wool/hairs to some degree.
Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are at the longest 160cm long x 90-100cm wide. The rug has a natural irregular shape and so some areas may measure a bit wider or narrower.
Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is smooth yet coarse similar to hair. The locks are very long and drapey and the rug is very thick and heavy.
Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural creamy-white with a grey area along the spine (centre) of the fleece and one area, in particular, has darker grey hairs this was the part of the fleece that grew on top of Doris’ head!
VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent 2 hours removing the most noticeable bits of food Doris collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of hay and grass seeds, the odd stranded beetle…! However I guarantee you will find bits of hay as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. these will be in areas deeper within the fleece along the spine where the hay and grass seeds are embedded within the felt and so I have left them as they are only noticeable on close inspection and to remove them would damage the lovely lock structure.. I have included a close up photo of some of the minimal vegetable matter debris buried within the wool, it is in minimal areas.
If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare, colourful flock of sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep into the food chain and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a fulltime mum and slave to sheep! In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
