Handmade felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug made from Frieda’s 2019 fleece.. 100% Natural wool

That’s Frieda in the photos – wearing this exact fleece. Frieda is a beautiful Gotland sheep and she lives with 70 other sheep including her lambs Astrid, Ivar, Armel and Ursa at my home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared her myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm Frieda or her fleece. This rug is silky and soft with beautiful curls and natural shades of grey. The proceeds from its sale will help pay for her (and her 70 friends and family members) care throughout the year.

This is a truly handmade natural 100% wool item. The carded wool used for the back is also Gotland wool that I bought from a small pet flock and then washed and hand-carded here on the farm. I decided to make the reverse of this rug a little more interesting and wet felted in some cream handspun wool (that came from our sheep Alice) to give a unique pattern on the back. Once the rug was dry I needle felted in some left over curls from this same fleece in a few areas that were a little bare. This rug has a nice oval shape to it. Because Gotland wool felts very easily some areas of the fleece had already over felted before it was sheared this is natural and acually makes the rug thicker and more durable.

This fleece would look lovely as a bedside rug or throw. It would also sit well on a chair or sofa or even as a floor rug in a low traffic area… It has a beautiful natural luxurious shiny look about and is soft to the touch. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it does shed wool somewhat but with this particular rug that is very minimal.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are at the longest 110cm long x 75cm wide. The rug has an oval shape and so some areas may measure a bit wider or narrower.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and silky. The locks are smoothe and longer in places and more tight and curly in others.

Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural mix of light and medium greys.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent an hour removing the most noticeable bits of debris Frieda collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of hay and grass seeds mostly.. However, you may find bits of hay as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. mostly along the spine/centre of the fleece. But the do pull out quite easily.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare, colourful flock of sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep into the food chain and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a fulltime mum and slave to sheep! In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
