Handmade felted fleece ‘vegetarian sheepskin’ rug made from Nym’s 2020 shearling fleece.. 100% Natural wool
That’s Nymphadora (Nym for short) in the photos – wearing this exact fleece as a lamb and youngster! Nym is a Wensleydale cross Icelandic sheep and she lives with 70 other sheep including her mum and dad at my home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. I sheared her myself with traditional blade shears as I do all my sheep taking great care not to harm Nym or her fleece. This rug is extra special and unique as it is Nympadora’s first fleece. It is super silky and soft and even has her little lamb curls still visible. The proceeds from its sale will help pay for her (and her 70 friends and family members) care throughout the year.
This is a truly handmade natural 100% wool item. The carded wool used for the back is from my sheep and hand-carded by myself. Once the rug was dry I needle felted in some curls from Nyn’s mum’s fleece in a few areas that were a little bare. This rug has a beautiful long natural shape to it and I managed to keep the neck wool whole when I was shearing Nym so the fluffy curved end is actually the neck area of wool. Because we had such a wet muddy winter the white fleeces got quite stained and even though this rug has been thoroughly hand washed a number of times the wool has a beautiful natural creamy colour which is more prominent in the areas that trailed near the floor.
This fleece would look absolutely amazing as a throw on a sofa or bed. It would also sit well as a floor rug in a low traffic area… It has a beautiful natural luxurious look about and is amazingly soft to the touch. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…
Due to the super soft feel the wool it has a bit of a velcro effect and so this rug is best suited to a clean environment and low traffic area.
Please note like most felted sheepskin rugs it does shed wool somewhat but with this particular rug that is very minimal.
Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are at the longest 140cm long x 80cm wide. The rug has a natural irregular shape and so some areas may measure a bit wider or narrower.
Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is very soft light and silky. The locks are very long and fluffy in places and more tight and curly in others.
Colour: The colour of this rug is a natural lustrous creamy-white with some areas slightly more stained.
VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent 4 hours removing the most noticeable bits of debris Nym collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of hay and grass seeds mostly.. However, you will find bits of hay as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. mostly along the spine/centre of the fleece. I have included a close up photo of some of the vegetable matter debris buried within the wool, it is in minimal areas.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare, colourful flock of sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep into the food chain and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a fulltime mum and slave to sheep! In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
