Description

Felted sheepskin rug handmade from Teasel’s 2022 fleece…

This beautiful dark rug is made from the 2022 fleece of Teasel! This is Teasel’s shearling fleece, her first ever fleece, the fleece she was born wearing that grew in size with her over her 1st year of life. The underside of the rug is a matching dark colour with brown and tan handspun wool yarn specifically spun to match the sun-bleached tips of Teasel’s dark colour fleece and then felted in a spiral pattern to give a beautiful design. I have needle-felted Teasel’s name on too. This is a lovely example of a felted fleece that would work perfectly as a floor rug or cover on a chair, sofa or bed this Autumn and Winter.

Teasel’s fleece is a lovely large size! It is a medium-weight fleece, lovely and fluffy, and very warm. Her fleece is lovely and soft and has a gorgeous wild look. The fleece is predominantly dark coloured with some lighter areas and the odd grey streak. The center of the rug has been brushed out to remove vegetable debris that Teasel collected in her fleece from hedges and her supper during the winter months. Teasel’s fleece does moult lightly which is normal for felted fleeces.

The back of the rug is made from carded Shetland wool that is then hand-felted to Teasel’s fleece. The carded wool is processed by me from raw fleeces I bought from the Aklah flock in Malton. The beautiful decoration on the back is created with my own handspun yarn that is carefully arranged in a pattern before the rug is felted. I spend a huge amount of time and care making sure my rugs are felted to a high standard. I am generous with the backing wool ensuring the finished rug is thick and durable and the felting is done with immense care and not rushed resulting in an even tight felt that will last for years and years.

Teasel is a cross breed sheep who lives with her twin sister Betony, their mum Dandelion and the rest of the flock at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Teasel is a very cheeky character and a bit of a diva sheep. She loves to climb on me if I sit in the field and will relentlessly paw for attention if she isn’t getting enough scratches.

All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Teasel’s fleece from the 2022 shearing and her first ever fleece. Each rug is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect a fleece, weather, age, diet etc.

This is a completely handmade product with almost every element created by myself and Teasel and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 140-150cm long x 90-100cm wide.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is smooth and soft, some areas around the rear legs are a little more hairy.

Colour: The colour of this rug is gorgeous dark brown/black with sunbleached tips and lighter areas along the edges and neck.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Teasel collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits of dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months… However, it is normal to still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece..  I have brushed out the very center of Teasel’s fleece to remove most of the debris but you may still find little bits of the Welsh hillside deep within the fleece.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular fleece from Teasel there is a little moulting/hairloss which is normal. Moulting does lessen and sometimes ceases entirely after a few weeks or months depending on the fleece and amount of use.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
