Description
Natural felted fleece wool rug handmade from Sorrel’s 2021 fleece…
This pretty felted sheepskin rug is made from the fleece of little Sorrel (pictured in the photos she is wearing this exact fleece in the 1st photo). Her fleece is a pale grey-beige colour that is darker coloured at the roots. Sorrel has a soft fluffy fleece that is lovely and lightweight and super warm. The locks are longer at the edges and shorter down the centre which has been brushed out after felting. The back of the rug is a lovely mix of grey, brown and beige colours that were specifically chosen to compliment Sorrel’s fleece. I handspun some wool in these colours too and then used it to decorate the underside of the rug, making Sorrel’s fleece just that bit more special. Sorrel’s name is also needle felted on there with a ‘sorrel leaf’. This fleece is perfect to drape on a chair or bed and bring a touch of cosy rustic luxury to your home!
Sorrel is an Icelandic cross Shetland/Soay sheep who lives here with her twin sister Leaf and their mum Daisy many other sheep at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. She is a feisty little sheep who likes picking fights with the other sheep and generally wins hence she is definitely one of the leaders within the flock and not to be messed with – a little boss. In spite of her feisty nature, Sorrel is a softie when it comes to cuddles, she loves having her chin and back scratched.
All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This particular fleece is Sorrel’s 2nd shear fleece aka the second fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.
Sorrel’s fleece is all-natural 100% wool – animal friendly and over a year in the making, it has great provenance.
The reverse of the rug is made from carded and handspun wool that is then hand felted to Sorrel’s fleece. It is a mix of wool from some of my other sheep that I prepare and card or spin myself.
This is a truly handmade product every element has been created by myself and Sorrel and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.
Sorrel’s fleece is a lightweight fleece so it is perfect to drape on a chair or bed and equally suited to use as a cosy rug. Like most felted fleeces it does moult a little on both sides, most noticeable along the edges of the fleece where the fiber is longer. Moulting usually lessens and settles down after a few weeks or months depending on the fleece.
Felted fleeces aka vegetarian sheepskin rugs are best suited to light use but they really will last for years and years if loved and treated with respect and care. Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) they are completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…
Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx at the longest 110-120cm long x 75-85cm wide.
Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is soft and fluffy.
Colour: The colour of this rug is a pretty very pale browny/grey beige it is a darker colour at the roots of the fleece and lighter at the tips. The underside is multicolour grey/beige/tan with handspun wool decoration.
VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Sorrel collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months.. However, you may still find little bits of dried leaves and grass seeds as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece.. I have brushed out the centre of Sorrel’s fleece to remove most debris but left the edges natural to retain the pretty structure and character of the fleece.
All felted fleeces naturally moult or shed to some degree some more than others depending on the fiber type. This particular fleece lightly moults.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
