Peg loom woven wool rug handmade from 3 fleeces from the same little sheep – ‘Phlox’…
This wild rustic rug is woven from 3 fleeces all from the same little sheep called Phlox! I saved Phlox’s fleeces over the years with the idea of making this large peg loom rug. I wanted to bring the character of Phlox and her black and white rugged fleece into the rug hence it has been purposefully woven to be darker at one end and fade through to white. This really is a special one-of-a-kind rug that had taken countless hours to craft I highly doubt I will make another like this with Phlox’s fleeces. When you think about it, this rug has actually been well over 3 years in the making. To me it is priceless and I was so very tempted to keep it but I made it with the intention to sell and I hope it finds the perfect person and home where it will be loved and treasured for years to come!
The warp of the rug is chunky handspun yarn that is from one of my other sheep – Xena. The tassels are made from locks of wool from Lupin and Mint’s shearling fleeces. Lupin and Mint are Phlox’s half-sisters. The yarn used to tie the tassels and finish the rug is also handspun yarn from Phlox’s mum – Fern. So every element is handcrafted from the flock – nothing bought in or mass processed. Even the little wooden tag is from an old fence post with Phlox’s name burnt on. The tag is just tied in place so you can easily remove it without damaging the rug.
Phlox’s peg loom rug is big! It is super thick and heavy too. Phlox has a hill-type fleece, so some parts are quite rough and contain kemp (small rough hairs) whilst others are softer to touch. It is the type of wool that is very warm and very durable making it ideal for making peg loom rugs. It would be a fantastic rug to place on a hearth or any hard floor to bring a touch of the wild Welsh hillside indoors this Autumn and Winter. This rug was woven with the raw unwashed fleece and then washed afterwards. It has a wonderful woollen earthy smell and still contains some of the natural lanolin found in the fleeces which you can feel when you touch it.
Phlox is a little crossbreed sheep who lives with her daughter Pepsi, mum Fern, twin sister Smudge, half sisters and the rest of the flock at our home on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Phlox is a very gentle sheep who is quite shy and timid. She doesn’t trust easily and is part of the little gang I call ‘the Wildlings’ !
All my sheep are hand-shorn by me with traditional blade shears taking great care not to harm the sheep or fleece.. This rug is made with 3 separate fleeces from 3 years all from Phlox.
This is a completely handmade product with every element created by myself and Phlox and the flock at our farm in Wales. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.
Dimensions: Measurements taken on the fleece side are approx 125-159cm long x 74cm wide max.
Wool texture: The feel of this rug is not the softest, it is what I would call a medium feel, neither soft not super coarse it is somewhere inbetween.
Colour: The colour of this rug is blacks, dark browns/greys and white.
VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): I spent a lot of time removing the most noticeable bits of debris Phlox collected in her fleece throughout the year, bits dried leaves mostly where she has foraged in hedges in the winter months… However, it is normal to still find little bits of dried leaves, grass seeds and parts of the Welsh hillside as this is a natural unprocessed handmade piece…
Wool rugs often moult or shed to some degree. This particular rug from Phlox may shed a little from the tassels and the little wild kemp hairs within Phlox’s fleece.

We keep a well-loved, high welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
