Vegetarian sheepskin rug handmade from Dash’s 2022 fleece…

This wild rug is made from the fleece of little Dash (she is pictured in the photos)Dash’s fleece is a very beautiful pale blue-grey colour with a darker line down the centre of her fleece. The locks are darker on their tips and fade to white at the roots. Her fleece has a beautiful wild rustic appearance with shorter wool down the spine of the fleece which tapers out too much longer wild locks at the edges. The center of the fleece has been lightly brushed to remove grass seeds and leaves and loose fibers of wool. This particular fleece is Dash’s 3rd shear fleece which is the 3rd fleece that she has grown in her lifetime. It is totally unique as each sheep’s fleece is never quite the same each year, many factors affect it, weather, age, diet etc.

The felt underside of the rug is made from carded wool from different sheep that is then hand-felted to Dash’s fleece. That felted wool is a blend of wool from some of my other sheep – Campion, Clover, Mochi, Daffodil, Frieda. The felt is decorated with handspun wool and wool locks making this rug reversible and even more unique and special. As a finishing touch I have needle-felted Dash’s name on there.

I would describe Dash’s fleece as medium weight, her fleece itself is light as is typical for the Icelandic type fleeces but the felt backing is lovely and thick giving it more weight. It would make a fantastic floor rug or equally suitable to drape on a sofa or bed. It is soft-ish to touch, the edges are a little more more rough and hairy. There is a little hairloss/moulting as is normal for hairy Icelandic type fleeces but it is quite minimal and I think will cease over time.

This is a completely handmade product every element has been created by myself and Dash and the flock at our farm in Wales. It has been over a year in the making, wandering the Welsh hillside and weathering the winter storms with Dash. It truly is a little part of her. The sale of it directly sustains the sheep and enables them to live out their whole lives here munching away growing beautiful wool. You can’t get more ethical than that.

There is a little more story to Dash’s fleece – this is a fleece kissed by fire. When this fleece wash drying after being felted and then washed, the chair she was draped over accidentally toppled and fell against our wood-burning stove. As you may be aware wool does not readily burn – it is incredible stuff. And so the fleece was whisked off the stove bearing just a faint scar where she had briefly touched the stove. In fact, the most noticeable thing was the smell of singed wool, hence Dash’s fleece was lightly brushed and then washed for a second time. I can honestly say that you would never be able to tell these events had ever occured had I not mentioned this, there is no ill or lasting effect to the fleece. But I am honest so I have to mention it. Not only that but I think it’s a rather good story that needs to be told and stay with this fleece and shows just how wonderful wool is!

Dash’s fleece would look amazing as a display piece, light-use floor rug or draped on a chair or bed. Perfect to add a touch of the wild to any home!

Being made of only wool (and the odd bit of hay…) it is completely biodegradable and kind to our planet…

Size: Length 110-130cm max measuring on the hairy fleece side. Width 80-100cm max. I take measurements from the narrowest/shortest length to the widest or longest length – the fleece is irregular in shape like a sheepskin.

Wool texture: The feel of this fleece is medium soft, hairier at the edges and softer down the center.

Colour: Pale blue grey and whites with some darker brown tips and the underside has browns and whites and greys mixed.

Hair loss: Slight but minimal.

VM(aka hay/grass seeds etc): You may find the odd wisp of hay or grass seed from the Welsh Hillside within the fleece and felt. This is a natural handmade item and I have done my best to remove them.

All felted fleeces moult or shed to some degree some more than others. With this particular piece there is some light hairloss.

If you have any questions or queries at all please send me a message I will be happy to help.

We keep a well-loved, high-welfare flock of pet and rescue sheep on the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Our sheep are a part of the family and each is known by name. All our wool and makes are vegetarian-friendly as we do not breed or sell sheep for the meat market and our sheep live out their natural lives with us. I am a full-time mum and shepherdess. In my (none existent!) free time I make things from wool from the sheep in order to sustain them.
